Abstract:	This dissertation aims to analyze and understand the economic, social and cultural background of Monteiro Lobato’s Jeca Tatu, especially its receptivity in the intellectual and urban environment of the First Republic. The character later became part of the Brazilian social memory as a representative and indispensable social type in the composition of national identity. The consolidation of coffee production in the West of São Paulo allowed it to emerge as the richest and most influential region in the country. Such wealth provided the material and cultural development of the capital of São Paulo, making it the most modern and developed Brazilian city. In this context emerges urban intellectual elite, which begins to reflect on national issues based on the positive experience of their state. The work also tried to present how the rural world of São Paulo echoed in the cultural productions of the time, since the economic structure of the coffee company had produced ways of acting, feeling and thinking characteristic of the interior man, specifically, the Paulista caipira. Finally, the research focused on Monteiro Lobato’s intellectual formation, which was taken as representative of the Brazilian rural world, which is important specifically in the composition, characterization and explanation of his character, Jeca Tatu. Lobato’s experience as a journalist provided him with the cultural repertoire to occupy a privileged position in the Brazilian literary field. In addition to that, the experience as a farmer from São Paulo’s countryside enabled him to have direct contact with the reality of the Brazilian caboclo, and to confront the idealizations produced by urban intellectuals about the Brazilian rural world. The work concludes that Lobato was able to condense in his character Jeca Tatu ways and social practices that represented the main characteristics of the countryman from São Paulo. Lobato synthesizes, in a caricatured way, aspects of the rural reality of the country that, at that time, were unknown to the intellectual elite of Brazil.
