| Abstract: | Mathematical models that consider precipitation (PCT) and evapotranspiration (EVT) in sewage treatment are rare. This research aimed to evaluate the influence of these climatic factors on five models of domestic sewage treatment in constructed wetlands (CWs). A domestic sewage treatment plant was constructed, consisting of a CW hybrid system (a subsurface vertical flow cell - CW-SSVF, followed by a horizontal subsurface CW-SSHF). Gravel support medium (#2) and Crysopogon zizanioides plant species were used in both cells. Hydrodynamic tracer test was performed to evaluate the flow of sewage in CWs. The daily outflows of influent and effluents from each cell were monitored for 22 months. Daily sewage and PCT levels were used to calculate EVT (mass flow rate). The concentration of organic matter, nitrogen and phosphorus of the sewage was quantified at the entrance and exit of each cell. These data (excepting phosphorus) were applied to 1º Order, Grau 2º Order, Monod, Monod Multi and Stover-Kincannon kinetic models, according to CSTR (continuous stirred-tank reactor) and PFR (plug-flow reactor), with no influence of PCT and EVT (considering only the concentration of pollutants) and with influences of these variables (considering the pollutant loads and the mean of the inflows and effluents in the equations). CW-SSVF presented hydrodynamics similar to CSTR (d = 1.58 and N = 1.54) and CWSSHF with high dispersion (d = 0.63 and N = 4.53). The mean EVT rates in CW-SSVF and CW-SSHF were 23.4 and 8.2 mm.d-1, corresponding to the mean percentage water loss of 30.8 and 35.8% of the influent sewage, respectively. In CW-SSVF, Monod Multi model (CSTR) was the most adequate to represent the behavior of NH4 +, NO3 - and COD. For BOD, the most representative was Stover-Kincannon-CSTR model. In the CW-SSHF, Monod Multi model (CSTR flow) represented the best behavior of NH4 + and BOD. Stover- Kincannon was the most suitable kinetics for CW-SSHF describing NO3 - (PFR flow) and COD (CSTR flow). It was concluded that the use of the pollutant load in the mathematical models representative of the sewage treatment presented a better performance (or statistical insignificance), except for BOD in CW-SSVF, than the models that consider only the concentration of the pollutants. Finally, the most suitable parameter for the CWs design was BOD, considering the Stover-Kincannon-CSTR (for CW-SSVF) and Monod Multi-CSTR (for CW-SSHF) models. |
