Abstract:	Friedrich Gundolf (1880-1931) was one of the most eminent German scholars during the first three decades of the 20th century. His Professorship Thesis, Shakespeare und der deutsche Geist, was regarded as a methodological as well as epistemological benchmark for Germanistics and the History of Literature. After the publication of d Goethe, in 1916, Gundolf became an intellectual reference in the German academic environment . Despite his background in Germanistics and his devotion to literary studies, Gundolf strove to ressignify the pragmatic role of human sciences based upon an emphasis on historical knowledge through the idea of life. This thesis aims at understanding the relationship built by Gundolf between historical knowledge and the neohumanistic concept of Bildung with a view to restoring the pragmatical formative function of historical knowledge. A detailed analysis of three of Gundolf’s texts features herein: Shakespeare und der deutsche Geist, his Professor Thesis and most meaningul work; Goethe; and his last monumental work entitled Shakespeare: Sein Wesen und Werk. Additionally, numerous articles and letters integrate the documentation used for this writing. This thesis seeks to analyze Gundolf’s oeuvre in the light of the intellectual debates he engaged in, namely, the crisis of the historicist paradigm during the nineteenth century as well as the crisis of Kultur, an important debate for the German intellectual milieu since the end of the nineteenth century. The understanding of the conceptual framework within which Gundolf’s oeuvre operates is the core of this writing, which entails the understanding of his intellectual debates, his proximity as well as his distances from the philosophies of Wilhelm Dilthey and Henri Bergson. Through Gundolf’s reflexions on scientific knowledge as a whole and historical knowledge in particular, this thesis analysed Gundolf’s thought in relation to historical knowledge, its connexions with his critique of German Kultur as well as with the German neohumanistic concept of Bildung so as to rebuild the German cultural identity. To Gundolf, one of the fundamental roles of historical knowledge was to proeserve the Bildung as the catalyst of a specifically national culture which founds German cultural identity. This thesis seeks to offer a minute picture of the path Gundolf followed to reach this goal.
