Abstract: Despite global efforts in recent decades to ensure food security of nations, today the number of people in the world suffering from hunger or malnutrition is almost one billion, while one and a half billion people are overweight or obese. Climate change is a factor that will further amplify these negative impacts by directly affecting the availability, accessibility, stability, use and quality of food. In order to understand the different causes and dynamics of food security and to establish more coherent and effective policies, the food system approach offers a systemic alternative that reaches a more complete analysis. In this approach food security is considered as a result of the analyzed food system and the factors that affect this result are elements of the system that interrelate with each other. The food systems approach was used to analyze local food systems at household level in Anse-à-Pitre, Haiti and Pedernales in the Dominican Republic. These are two border cities, delimited by the Pedernales River, sharing the same basin. Despite their proximity, social, environmental and food security differences in Anse-à-Pitres are worrisome. Based on the need to understand the dynamics and differences of the food systems of the two municipalities and based on the gap in the studies of food systems at the level of households, the objective of this tesis was to understand the food systems of Anse-à-Pitre and Pedernales through the evaluation of food security, the traditional ecological knowledge of the households and the study of the resilience of food systems. Traditional ecological knowledge about household agricultural production in Anse-à-Pitre, and Pedernales plays a central role as a reproducer of more sustainable practices in agriculture. The resilience of food systems was brought as an approach to understand the dynamics of the food systems of the two cities and to predict and prevent states in which the food security of populations is at risk. It is concluded that the elements of food systems are indissociable and the importance of their study is to understand the results of the food systems. These results in Anse-à-Pitres and Pedernales are evidently contrasting, but the causes go beyond a difference in the economic access of the populations. Different logics of production and knowledge reproduction strengthen agricultural households in Anse-à-Pitres and compensation for the difficulties of access to food have been evidenced.
