Abstract: This paper analyzes the book-tax conformity (BTC) influence on accruals earnings management, considering G-20 common and code law countries. To do so, we used a sample of 26 countries during 2006 to 2016 and realized three steps. First, we applied Kothari, Leone and Wasley (2005) earnings management model, with panel data, to estimate the discretionary accruals required in earnings management index construction. Second, we used Tang’s (2014) model to obtain the root-mean-squared errors (RMSE) and develop the BTC measure. Also, we utilized this model with panel data to examine whether earnings management, tax evasion, and its interaction term explains book-tax differences (BTD) in each country. Finally, we sought to explain earnings management index as a function of BTC, institutional variables and its interactions. On the first stage, we observed that Spain, Netherlands and Belgium had the highest earnings management index over the period, and that discretionary accruals demonstrated a growth trend between 2006 and 2016. Regarding Tang’s (2014) model with panel data, we observed that larger tax evasion is associated with higher BTD in all countries, while earnings management and their interaction with tax evasion were significant only in some of them. Also, the RMSE from cross-sectional regressions shows that Finland and Australia had the highest and lowest BTC during the period, respectively, and that there was a decline trend in countries mandatory BTC, which is consistent with the idea of countries moving towards more separated financial and fiscal system’s. Finally, in the last model, we found that larger BTC is associated with less earnings management, but that this relationship differs between IFRS adopters and non-adopters. Notably, in IFRS adopters, larger BTC is associated with larger earnings management. Thus, it is important to consider institutional variables when evaluating BTC and earnings management relationship.
