Abstract:	HIV/AIDS disproportionately affects people living in countries with serious socioeconomic problems. Ninety five per cent of people living with HIV (PLWH) live in developing countries. The prevalence of HIV/AIDS in Mozambique is 11.5% among adults aged 15-49 and is higher among women (13.1%) than men (9.2%). The prevalence among young women aged 15-24 is higher (11.1%) than the prevalence among men in the same age group (3.7%). The object of this study is to discuss the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Mozambique in the context of the generational asymmetries, localizing gender and female vulnerability for HIV infection, considering cultural practices and traditions among society that can amplify the vulnerability. Despite the fact that women’s empowerment and gender equality policies appear frequently on the Mozambique´s development agenda, data shows weak participation and non-empowerment of women. This leaves them vulnerable to HIV and sexually transmitted infections.
