| Abstract: | Reservoirs are artificial ecosystems that generally modify the structure of biological populations, so it is necessary to understand the population dynamics of this type of environment, such as the fluctuation of populations and limnological variables at the time of construction of the hydroelectric reservoir or even possible Implications for biomonitoring. Thus, the objective of this study was to understand the spatio-temporal dynamics of zooplankton communities in a tropical hydroelectric reservoir, in order to improve practices in environmental monitoring. For this, we analyze the ecological patterns corresponding to the zooplankton community along the formation of the Santo Antônio do Jari hydroelectric reservoir, in the Jari river that is on the border of the states of Pará and Amapá, Brazil. The zooplankton community (cladoceran, copepod, rotifer, and testate amoebae) and limnological environmental variables were collected in 23 months. Nine months in the river phase, before effective damming (February 2012 to February 2014), three months in the transition phase (May to July 2014) and eleven months in the reservoir phase, in which the plant was already in operation (August 2014 to August 2015). The main results show that (1) the population fluctuation was low and the environmental one was high, being different in the three phases of the reservoir construction; (2) the population fluctuation and limnological environmental variables are visible, but the mechanisms are not clear; (3) biomonitoring programs for these systems should be designed cautiously; (4) but even then some biodiversity shortcuts can be used in biomonitoring, such as the use of gender data replacing species data and the use of presence data / Absence of species replacing the abundance data. We suggest using weather and landscape data to model the patterns seen. In addition, we also recommend that this strategy be tested first using pilot surveys before it is adopted elsewhere, and thus resources saved with the use of cost-effective strategies could then be directed to support the monitoring of a range of biological groups. |
