Abstract: The ultrathin film deposition self-assembly technique consists on the electrostatic adsorption of alternating layers of cationic and anionic materials on the surface of a solid substrate. This work proposes a mechanism for the formation of anionic graphene oxide (GO) films on quartz substrates in which the GO sheets bind one to other without the requirement of a cationic polyelectrolyte material between them. The strategy adopted is to immerse a quartz substrate during 3 min alternately in a GO suspension prepared at different pHs (3 and 11) and in solutions of transition metals ions such as Ni2+ and Co2+. The UV-vis absorption spectra indicate that the adsorbed GO mass is larger when the film is prepared with suspension at pH = 3, since the protonation of anionic groups in GO decreases the electrostatic repulsion and favors the approach of more GO sheets to the substrate. Although there is also an immersion of the substrate in metal ions solutions, results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray dispersive energy show that films deposited in this way contain only GO. However, when the deposition is carried out by immersion of the substrate only in the GO suspension, the adsorbed mass is small and a saturation of adsorption occurs soon after the first immersions. In an additional experiment, films are deposited by immersing the substrate in the GO suspension for 30 s, with and without immersion in metal ion solution. In this case, it is possible to observe that the adsorbed mass of GO is significantly larger than that attained with immersion of 3 min. because the adsorption could occur before reaching the equilibrium. Furthermore, it is possible to verify that without immersion in the solution of the metal ion, the GO mass reaches a saturation level in about 600 s, while it grows continuously when the substrate is immersed also in solution of the metal ion. Based on those results it is proposed that the metallic ions screen the anionic groups of the GO and, as the acidic deposition condition investigated initially, the electrostatic repulsion is minimized and the approach of more sheets of GO to the substrate is favored. The interaction between GO sheets is possibly the hydrogen bonding type and should also involve water molecules.
