Abstract: A rockfill comprises sound rock and behave itself in a manner essentially discrete. Nevertheless, in most cases, rockfills are simulated as continuous medium. The required parameters for a rockfill dam project execution are difficult to be determined due to the difficulty of handling their large particles for mounting samples and the lack of availability of equipment on a sufficient scale to test the enormous samples. Thus, the discrete element method is presented as a solution for these problems because treats rockfills as a discrete medium and allows the achievement of large-scale tests in a computational manner. Overall, rockfills present complex behavior that is, in most cases, influenced by microscopic sample parameters. In order to analyze the influence of the microscopic parameters on the macroscopic behavior, rockfill characterization tests were reproduced using the discrete element method by the open source software Yade. The tests reproduced were the one-dimensional compression test and the direct shear test that already were executed previously in a low resistance granite in laboratory. The tests have shown that the most influent parameter was the Young’s modulus of the particles since it directly influences the forces on the contacts between them. The friction angle and the rotational stiffness also exert some influence on the sample behavior but in a such smaller way. The one-dimensional compression test was carried out with and without breakage having both very similar responses. This happens because the breakage of the particles was negligible. The application of the discrete element method proved effective in the representation of the real behavior of the tested material.
