Abstract

O presente trabalho objetiva analisar os efeitos da Revolução Industrial na redefinição dos papéis da mulher na sociedade inglesa/ norte americana do século XIX. Enfatizaremos os seguintes aspectos: o surgimento da classe trabalhadora e a exploração da mulher como mão de obra barata; a transição da sociedade rural para a sociedade industrial; o efeito desagregador desses fatores na formação da família e a construção da ideologia do anjo do lar. Acrescentamos à dimensão de gênero a problemática da classe trabalhadora, na análise de obras de Elizabeth Gaskcll e Rebecca Harding Davis. _______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT

The present worfy aims at analyzing the effects ofthe Industrial Revolution in the redefinition of the role of women in Nineteenth-century England and the United States. We compare histórica! and sociological material with their fictional treatment, and the interface gender-class in some novéis by Elizabeth Gasfaell and Rebecca Harding Davis.We study the birth ofworkjng class consciousness, the exploitation of women as source of cheap labour, the process of industrialization and urbanization in its general aspects, and their disruptive effects in the traditional concept of family as Well as the consequent development of the home-sweet-home ideology and of the image of women as the angel in the house.
