Abstract:	The increasing and rapid expansion of tourism has caused a rethink about the process of local and regional development that tourism causes the receiving destination. It has been noticed, especially in recent decades, that the diffusion of capitalist dynamics in coastal areas has led to major changes in the environment. Among these, there is the presence of tourism, changing production social relations, changing the daily lives of native populations and resulting in sociocultural, environmental and economic implications. This thesis aims to study the beach of Barra Grande, located in the city Cajueiro da Praia, on the coast of the state of Piaui, which has been undergoing a process of intensification of tourism in the last two decades, which has caused a series of impacts of several sorts on the place. Thus, the objective was to identify and analyze the main socio-economic, cultural and environmental effects on the local community arising from tourism use on the beach Barra Grande / PI, considering the temporal cut from 1990 to 2010. For such, we sought to recognize the organization of tourism on the coastal state, and know the lifestyle of the local community, before and after the arrival of tourism on the beach; the practice of tourism on the beach in Barra Grande was characterized explained by the influence of sport kitesurf in the consolidation of the Barra Grande beach as a tourist destination, it was noted how tourism can help with community development and, finally, proposals to achieve sustainable tourism development in Barra Grande were presented. The methodological process used in this study focused on collecting primary data by conducting interviews with local residents, which showed their different views about the implications that tourism has brought to their lives and to the place as a whole. It was found that the tourism which has been practiced in Barra Grande is far from the precepts of sustainable tourism, in particular the lack of a participatory planning to order such growth, which has caused serious problems such as lack of treatment for solid waste; excessive speculation, the replacement of old production activities (fishing and subsistence farming) and devaluation of traditional cultural events. Mobilized by sustainable tourism, the local community has developed important actions aimed at a change of scenery. But the interference of public administration, though limited, is essential in this process. Finally, initiatives were suggested in order to attain sustainable development of tourism on the beach in Barra Grande, which could also be applied to other destinations with similar characteristics.
