barragens, no qual a matéria e a memória retornam, revelando a
a marcar o território. Metodologicamente, o trabalho combina
e tempos retornam continuamente, atravessando a paisagem do
Vale do São Francisco. | pt_BR |

| dc.description.abstract1 | The roar that announced the end of entire worlds in the São Francisco Valley did not come from the sky, but from the inexorable advance of the waters that, as they swelled, devoured the landscape
to fulfill their promise of “redemption.” For centuries, the river’s
permanence in the semi-arid region traced a civilizational course
that attracted communities and consolidated cities; from the 1970s
onward, however, the waters that once founded territories began
to submerge them. With the growing energy demands of industrial
centers, the sertão was converted into a “sacrifice zone,” finding
in the Polígono das Secas—stigmatized as a “problem region”—
the legitimacy for the construction of successive concrete walls that
submerged entire cities. This gesture inscribes the Capitalocene—
when the river is converted into a commodity and the basin into a
field of territorial expropriation—having in the Sobradinho (1979)
and Itaparica (1988) dams its most emblematic expressions, manifested in the submergence of seven urban centers and the displacement of approximately 137,000 people. By chaining the Velho
Chico, such engineering halted the pulse of floods and droughts
and established a new temporality in the valley. In this time suspended by damming, the past ceases to inhabit only the past and begins to continuously tension the present. Through the lens of Gilles
Deleuze’s “crystal-image” and Henri Bergson’s concept of duration,
this research investigates the territory of the São Francisco Valley as
a historical crystal fractured by dams, in which matter and memory
return, revealing the coexistence of a virtual past and a fractured
present that inhabit the same landscape. This rupture unfolds into
four fractures: the environmental, in which the ancestral cycle of
symbiosis between river, land, and human life returns in the form
of a necrophagous circuit; the social, in which the state’s promise
of progress and light refracts through the experience of displacement and reappears as waiting; the material, in which the matter of
submerged cities persists beneath the waters and returns through
fragments, stones, and urban traces that traverse the present, while
new cities are projected upon their absence; and the memorial, in
which the ruins and fissures of the landscape bring back the past
and the trauma of rupture, continuing to mark the territory. Methodologically, the study combines history, urbanism, and sociology
through critical cartography, documentary research, and a mosaic
of voices collected in the territory (2021–2024). Beyond physical
erasure, the investigation reveals a landscape of persistence, where nothing has a clear beginning or end when the flooding also
occurs within. Through the fissures opened by development, what
was dammed overflows and life insists on emerging, revealing a
territory where matter, memory, and time continuously return,
traversing the landscape of the São Francisco Valley. | pt_BR |
