Abstract: The agro-ecological strategies implicit in 'peasant' ways of life and their interfaces with socio-agrobiodiversity in the Caatinga-Cerrado ecotone areas are still little studied, and the relevance of this topic intensifies even more when they are affected by agribusiness and other means and modes of capitalist production. The main objective of this research was to analyze the uses, management and challenges of the socio-agrobiodiversity present in peasant agro-ecosystems in southwestern Piauí, located on the border between the municipalities of Redenção do Gurguéia and Curimatá. We also sought to understand the role of these communities in safeguarding a Caatinga-Cerrado transition area (ecotone), located close to one of the regions of agribusiness expansion in the south of Piauí, around the Serra Vermelha, characterized by a high level of biodiversity. The methodology adopted in the research is qualitative, involving the collection of secondary and primary data. Primary data was collected through participant observation, semi-structured interviews, cross-country walks and drawings of peasant agroecosystems in the communities of Feirinha and Mocambo. Secondary data collection on the historical series of areas used for commodity production in Piauí included data from the National Supply Company - CONAB (2011-2021), the agricultural census of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE, 2017), and data from the Mapbiomas platform to monitor changes in land use in the region, based on commodity production. The data from Map Biomas and CONAB updated how deforestation has occurred in the study region over the last 20 years, especially the expansion of the agricultural frontier, especially soybean cultivation areas, which have doubled in the state since 2015. This period coincides with the loss of communal territories and enclosures in the caatingas and chapadas areas in the Feirinha community, impacting cattle breeding and the extraction of Cerrado fruits, and with the intensification of the use of agricultural inputs (chemical fertilizers, pesticides) in the Mocambo Community. Despite this, a total of 79 species of cultivated plants, 11 domesticated animals, 68 species of native plants and 52 wild animals are included in the socio-biodiversity included in the use and management of agro-ecosystems. t was concluded that the expansion of agribusiness and peasant invisibility are two extremely challenging issues for peasant family farming in this Cerrado-Caatinga ecotone area, pointing to the need for greater integration and strengthening of agroecology in the study area, especially in the communities studied. It is also concluded that peasant territoriality, when maintaining its ways of life in dialogue with agroecology, in these communities, acts as a true resistance to agribusiness, and plays a fundamental role in safeguarding the Cerrado-Caatinga ecosystem in the Southwest of Piauí, through importance of maintaining local biological diversity for these actors, but also for their contributions to the holistic perspective on agroecosystems, confirming the endogenous potential and the gifts of nature from the perspective of Good Living.
