Abstract: The Lake Paranoá (LP) basin is one of the areas of the Federal District that has high urban occupancy rates and is integrated with the capital of Brazil. During its occupation process, it suffered from the urbanization process, allowing the release of domestic effluents, the presence of construction sites, the appearance of irregular occupations, among others. These processes caused the Lake Paranoá, built to alleviate the climate situation in Brasília, generating electricity and currently also used for public supply, to be heavily impacted at different stages during its more than 60 years of existence. This caused the lake to suffer from processes of eutrophication and siltation. Despite the common sense that the lake has been suffering heavily from silting, there are no scientific studies that demonstrate how real silting rates and how sediments transported and deposited in the lake impact the quality of the environment. In this context, this research sought, through geochemical studies, to analyze the transformations in the LP basin and bathymetric surveys to remedy this knowledge gap. For the development of the study, historical aerial images from the year 1958 to 2016, topobatimetric data, stratigraphic profiles, the gutter material, soils, and suspended matter were used to evaluate both the physical and chemical processes. The results indicated that: (1) The siltation rate per decade of the LP, 1.59%, is within the average of other reservoirs in Brazil, which is 4.42%; (2) Silting is concentrated in the LP arms, with sedimentation rates per decade between 2.45% and 7.68%; (3) The stratigraphic profiles demonstrate the differentiated sediment deposition indicating the presence of different phases of the lake, associated with land use and land cover; (4) Most of the river structure of the Paranoá River was not affected; (5) Part of the LP arms and the middle of it have only fine sediments, with layers around 50cm; (6) There are anthropogenic sources linked to the discharge of domestic sewage and civil construction that affect the quality of the sediments; (7) The main anthropogenic activities responsible for altering the quality of sediment and surface water are civil construction and the discharge of sewage and sewage treatment effluents. These effluents generate / lead, for example, to enrichment in P and Zn of the sediments of Lake Paranoá.
