Abstract: During the past years, the video, voice and data services available in the fixed communications networks have been requested by users in mobility. This fact has motivated the development of technologies that allow traffic of a lot of information in cellular telephone networks. WiMAX e UMTS are technologies that can help the traffic flow. The WiMAX, known as the fourth generation of cellular and developed primarily for data services, has, when comparing with UMTS, greater spectral efficiency, better quality of service, and therefore higher transmission rate, lower bandwidth consumption and lower network cost. Besides the great potential for provision of services, WiMAX is described as one of the tools for digital convergence, and also it has been remembered as a candidate for the return channel for interactive services of the Brazilian System of Digital TV. The aim of this work is to estimate the demand for access to an eventual WiMAX network to be deployed in Distrito Federal (DF), in order to determine the number of Base Transceiver Station (BTS) necessary to meet the requirements of capacity and coverage. Accordingly, available data of demographic density will be used to subdivide the DF in rural, suburban, urban and densely urban regions. The profile of the target public will also be analyzed and will the classified in professional, technological and casual user, in order to allow an estimate of the average demand for access by users in each region. To calculate the capacity of each BTS, will be considered technologies that offer efficient spectral band consumption, such as the OFDMA technique, adaptive modulation, coding and multiple antenna systems. The signal propagation condition is another factor that affects the amount of BTS, therefore, the COST 231 model will be used to determine the maximum coverage radius of BTS, in order to adjust the number of stations adequately.
