| Abstract: | Concrete gravity dams and locks are structures, almost always large in size, which have a wide variety of uses, according to the needs of each region where they are implemented. In the engineering of these structures, it is essential to guarantee minimum safety conditions, once their rupture can generate real catastrophes both economically and socially and environmentally. As a result, this paper addresses an analytical-numerical and experimental study of dynamic fluid-structure interaction problems, with application to concrete gravity dams and locks. At first, a simplified analytical methodology, called the Prescribed Pressure Field Artifice (PPFA), was made to determine the decoupled and fluid-structure coupled natural frequencies associated with the additional mass dominant modes in an incompressible regime. The PPFA covers structures with constant or linearly varying inertia, and makes it possible to obtain the frequencies associated with impulsive hydrodynamic pressures for different vibration modes in a dam-reservoir and lock-reservoir coupled problem. The results obtained by PPAF were compared with the Finite Element Method (FEM), using ANSYS® software, with the Pseudo-dynamic Method, with the Modified Transfer Matrix Method (MTMM) and with literature results. The comparative studies were applied to several dam and lock geometries. The responses were satisfactory and showed percentage differences of less than 5% in the incompressible regime. In the compressible regime the percentage differences were larger (around 10 to 20%). The PPAF was also applied in determining frequencies at Pina Flat Dam, Tsuruda Dam and Koyna Dam. A parametric study evaluating the influence of parameters related to the geometric dimensions of the reservoir coupled with dams and locks was presented. Furthermore, in the analysis of lock-reservoir interaction, a study was done to investigate the natural frequencies and vibration modes associated with free surface sloshing waves with application to Tucuruí lock. Finally, to complement the study of sloshing, the work includes an experimental approach. A harmonic vibrating table was built and used to study the free surface sloshing effects in a reservoir with rigid boundaries. In this perspective, the Motion Capture by Video Technique (MCVT) was used to acquire the experimental results. The comparative studies on natural frequencies and convective (sloshing) pressures obtained analytically, numerically and experimentally showed maximum percentage differences of 7.32%. Therefore, this work contributes to several aspects related to fluid-structure interaction in dams and locks. |
