Abstract: This master dissertation presents the results corresponding to the production of green hydrogen from the electrochemical reforming of ethanol in high temperature polymer exchange membrane electroreformer based on phosphoric acid doped polybenzimidazole (PBI). One the key parameters that influence the activity of the ethanol electro-oxidation (EtEO) is the metallic percentage in the catalyst composition. Based on the high efficient of Pt for the complete oxidation of ethanol, this work focuses on the influence of the Pt percentage in commercial catalyst with different loading, 20, 40, 60 and 80 wt% on carbon black Vulcan XC-72R and Pt black. The materials are physicochemically characterized by diffractometry to assess the crystalline facets and the average crystal sizes, by thermogravimetry to confirm the metallic loading, and by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to assess the morphology and particle size distribution. Next, they are electrochemically evaluated by, first, half-cell three-electrode analysis to determine the electrochemically active surface area and the activity towards ethanol electro-oxidation in an electrolyte that mimics the single-cell. Completed this more fundamental studies, the catalysts are tested on a PBI-H3PO4 polymeric electrolyte electrolyzer, analyzing the cell performance and the formed oxidation products. The results reveal that there is an optimum in terms of electrochemical performance and CO2 selectivity for 60% Pt/C. Smaller metallic loading, despite having smaller crystal sizes and, hence, higher surface area, present a larger tendency to be massively covered by oxygenated species, becoming less active for EtEO, in addition to the formation of a thicker catalytic layer, which impairs the mass transportation. On the other hand, high metallic loadings notably reduce the surface area, which impacts on the performance. In terms of selectivity, a trade-off can be attained between an increase in the concentration of active sites for higher metallic loading, augmenting the chances for acetaldehyde readsorption and futher oxidation to CO2 and too thin catalytic layer in which product exit is more efficient, counterbalancing the mentioned effect.
