Abstract: Millions of people are victims of traffic accidents in the world every year. The vast majority of these accidents are essentially caused by human errors, which involve speeding, cell phone use while driving, consumption of alcoholic beverages, among other factors. The use of autonomous vehicles, therefore, by reducing or even eliminating the need for human intervention, has the possibility of making traffic safer and, consequently, reducing the number of accidents and victims. However, there are still many challenges to be overcome in order to have autonomous vehicles operating effectively on urban roads. In this sense, the present doctoral thesis seeks to propose solutions that can be applied in the context of autonomous vehicles. Three aspects are addressed in this research: fusion of sensor data for object detection, positioning estimation and conception of new business models linked to the use of autonomous vehicles. Regarding to the object detection, the main focus is related to the detection of vehicles and pedestrians. In the first case, a technique for fusing raw data from camera and Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) is proposed. In the second case, the aim is to seek and analyze techniques that can reliably detect pedestrians who are obstructed by other objects, a fact that is quite common in an urban scenario. Regarding location, the use of satellite signal receivers based on antenna array and tensor techniques is shown to be a promising alternative to mitigate the effects of multipath and, consequently, minimize vehicle positioning errors. Regarding new business models involving autonomous vehicles, an architecture of a virtual assistant is proposed to be implemented in vehicles in order to facilitate human-machine interaction. This architecture also describes the integrations between the virtual assistant and services inside and outside the vehicle. In addition, a process aimed at developing and evolving the knowledge base of this assistant is also described.
