| Abstract: | Discussions about the quality of pedestrian paths have been on the agenda since the 1980s and, in recent years, they have gained more prominence in urban studies and public policies aimed at cities. Requalifying urban spaces to provide a good walking experience is a strategy that helps sustainable mobility and the health of the population. Pedestrians once again appropriate public spaces, thus increasing vitality, safety and a sense of community. When studying the factors that influence the quality of pedestrian paths, the literature indicates that the variables (as, for example, land use and road infrastructure) that characterize the urban form have a special impact. A first question then arises that needs to be studied from a theoretical point of view: what is the relationship between urban form and walkability? These variables, when combined with others, can be used to assess the suitability of pedestrian paths and indicate their walkability, here understood as a reflection of the physical characteristics that facilitate or hinder the ability to walk in a given public space. In order to quantify and/or qualify the suitability of urban space for pedestrians, there are several studies on walkability that can be translated into evaluation methods. These methods cover a range of subjects and objectives, and can be applied with the help of on-site surveys, application of questionnaires, satellite images or georeferencing resources. This data can be used to analyze locations at different scales, whether at an intersection, a street, a neighborhood, a city or even the space-time. Each method has its own indicators and evaluation guidelines; however, they are not always easy to understand and apply, mainly due to the degree of subjectivity that some evaluation criteria contain and the need for specific knowledge related to areas such as: engineering, urbanism and statistics. Here, new research questions of interest arise: How are walkability assessment methods proposed and applied? Are there similarities? What degree of subjectivity and objectivity is present in the assessment guidelines of the methods? Therefore, this work aims to conceptualize the relationship between urban form and walkability as well as to analyze the degree of objectivity of guidelines and forms of evaluation of some methods proposed over the last 30 years. For this, a theoretical, historical and critical background about urban form, walkability and their evaluation methodologies was performed. Fourteen methods were selected for in-depth study, for which the cataloging of their objectives, similarities, differences, subjectivities and objectivities of the evaluation criteria was done. It was found that among the 14 methods evaluated, a total of 192 original indicators were obtained, such that, after a systematization and correlation of the methods, they were distributed in 8 final categories and 34 final indicators (named like this, for being a grouping proposal suggested in this dissertation) for classification and analysis. Finally, a discussion was held about the criteria/indicators listed from the literature and the results of the methods' analysis. It was found that among the 192 original indicators, 149 (77.61%) were related to urban form, mainly those that raised questions about the design of the road infrastructure. In addition, 123 (64.06%) indicators were evaluated by objective criteria, and it is possible to note that the methods proposed after 2003 sought to add greater objectivity to the analysis guidelines. It is believed that pedestrian paths are essential for sustainable and safe urban mobility, so the analysis carried out in this dissertation can help to standardize the evaluation criteria for walkability and its diffusion as a more inclusive tool for analysis. Ultimately, with clearer and more generally applicable methods, it is easier to identify the main problems to be mitigated, as well as what impact interventions by different agents would have on the urban environment. In addition, methods that evaluate the present moment of pedestrian paths can also serve as a support in future road projects. |
