Abstract:	Ever-present in our daily lives, idiomatic expressions (IE) are frequently used by speakers of all languages. Nevertheless, teaching and learning them is a challenge as natural languages are composed of a great variety of fixed and semi-fixed combinations whose semantic complexity can vary from transparent to totally opaque. In this study, we analyzed eighty idioms related to food in Brazilian Portuguese in order to better understand their meaning in context and, based on that, propose translation strategies and equivalents in English. Our goal was to present a translator-oriented, bilingual (Portuguese-English) glossary of IE. For each entry, we provide a definition, authentic examples, synonyms, and suggest equivalents, with authentic usage examples. We have also looked into their degree of idiomaticity and fixity and attested their use in general language corpora for both languages. What makes this material unique, though, is the fact that it can be consulted electronically by semantic fields / themes, based on the 600+ distinct words we used to describe and categorize each IE from an onomasiological standpoint. This can contribute to an easier identification of potential equivalents and synonyms by users. Among the most productive themes / semantic fields, INGREDIENTS such as tropical fruits (pitanga, jaca, mamão) and traditional Brazilian DISHES, such as angu, occurred often in our list. Their translation may pose a challenge to translators if the IE’s words are used in the source text both in their connotative and denotative meaning. We managed to find equivalents for the meanings, mostly, but not not for the word combinations. Regarding the degrees of fixity (high, medium, and low), we found that most IE are in the medium range (59%), and a few in the low (3%) range, which can attest to the ability of IE to adapt to variable linguistic contexts. In the case of degrees of idiomaticity (high, medium and low), we observed that equivalents for IE with high level of idiomaticity are formed by words and referents very distinct from those of the source language. We hope this study can contribute to advancing translation of Portuguese-English IE and, perhaps, inspire the creation of new methodologies and lexicographic products aimed at translators.
