Abstract: Research on subjective well-being seeks to identify and measure variables associated with the evaluations people make of their lives, in global and specific aspects, and in relation to the positive and adverse feelings they experience. Understanding that adolescence is a period of many physical, cognitive, psychological, and social transformations, analyzing the quality of subjective well-being in adolescents is essential for the healthy development of this public. Studying the well-being of talented adolescents can also help their trajectory and contribute to their performance and happiness. To define talent, Renzulli’s Three Rings Model was adopted, which considers the high skills that some people manage to maintain in certain domains, characteristics related to creativity, and involvement with the task in one or more areas: academic, artistic, sports, social or other. The development of talented adolescents is not homogeneous; therefore, the characteristics they present, the environment, and the support they receive, can serve as protective factors, promoting adaptation and socio-emotional adjustment or contribute to maladjustments, making identification and enhancing of their skills. For all these reasons, the need to investigate the quality of well-being of adolescents with high ability/gifted behaviors is justified. Given the above, this study aimed to investigate and describe the quality of subjective well-being of talented adolescents, checking for differences in levels of well-being in relation to gender, age, and type of school. Ninety-six adolescents, aged between 10 and 19 years, identified as talented, participated in this study. Of the total number of participants, 60 were male and 36 were female. Regarding the types of schools, 41 were students from public schools, 41 from military schools, and 14 from private schools. Data were collected using three scales that assess the components of subjective well-being in adolescents: Positive and Negative Affects Scale for Adolescents (EAPN-A), Global Life Satisfaction Scale for Adolescents (EGVS-A), and Multidimensional Life Satisfaction Scale for Adolescents (EMSV-A). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics using SPSS 20.0. To verify if there were differences in the levels of subjective well-being and to make the proposed comparisons between the groups, the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was performed, followed by posthoc tests through the Bonferroni correction. The results showed that, in general, talented adolescents have a good level of positive affect and satisfaction with life, which corroborates the national and international literature. It was observed that in the participating schools, a greater number of boys were identified as talented. Girls showed a higher incidence of negative affects when compared to boys. In the analysis of differences by age group, the younger group, from 10 to 12 years of age, presented higher means of positive affection and satisfaction with life. There was a decrease in the index of positive affect among the groups of adolescents with increasing age. The age group from 16 to 18 years old had the highest average of negative affects, when compared to younger adolescents. When comparing the types of school, the means of positive affect were higher among students from the military school, followed by private and public schools, respectively. Regarding negative affects, the military school had lower rates in the following items: depressed, discouraged, and sad. In the general satisfaction with life scale, adolescents from the three types of school positively evaluated their lives, and in the multidimensional scale the military school stood out positively in the following dimensions: self, school, and self-efficacy. Although many talented adolescents present good levels of subjective well-being, the results point to the need for greater attention to differences in gender, school environment, and age group, with emphasis on the final years of adolescence. As a proposal for action, it is recommended: (a) continuing education of educators; (b) emphasis on identifying and promoting talent; (c) differentiated attention to the female public in the identification of talents and referral to programs to assist students with high abilities; (d) encouraging the study of the benefits of positive psychology by professionals and guardians who work with children and adolescents.
