Abstract:	This article discusses the process of establishing and protecting as cultural heritage site Vila Planalto former construction camp created in the second half of the 1950s as a base to the construction of Brasilia, capital city of Brazil. Although considered illegal after the inauguration of Brasilia, in 1960, Vila Planalto kept standing, in a troubled process that ended up recognizing it as a heritage site in 1988 for its role in the early days of the city, thus adding the value of local pioneering to the monumental image of the Brazilian capital. Basing on the relevant literature and on newspaper articles of that time, this paper analyses the context of Vila Planalto’s preservation amid regularization of other former construction camps which occurred along the 1980's – the Metropolitan, the Candangolândia and the Paranoá. This paper investigates the particular reasons why Vila Planalto, unlike the other nuclei, has been effectively recognized as historical heritage. As a conclusion, the paper relates heritage and control of space and points out how the images of Vila Planalto and Brasilia articulate in a single notion of place branding comprising modern monumentality and construction workers' encampment.
