Abstract: The aim of this longitudinal study was to evaluate traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) in primary dentition and associated factors during 24 months of age in babies belonging to a cohort at the University Hospital of Brasília. During the 12 and 24 month follow-up appointment, sociodemographic, socioeconomic and behavioral data were collected, as well as data on TDIs and the dental care after trauma. In addition, the baby's oral cavity was evaluated for the presence of TDIs, both for 12 and 24 months, and occlusion development only at 24 months. The data obtained were tabulated and a descriptive statistical analysis and chi-square test for associations was performed (p<0.05). Of these babies, 433 and 127 babies attended to the 12 and 24 months follow-up, respectively included in the study. Of these babies, 120 attended both periods of follow- up. At 12 months of age, 50.6% were boys and a total of 56.7% had some oral trauma. Of these, 82.8% suffered soft tissue injuries and the prevalence of TDIs was 19.4%, with the upper right central incisor tooth (42%) being the most affected tooth. In the 24 month follow-up, 52.8% were boys and 76.4% had some oral trauma, of these 88.6% had suffered soft tissue injuries and the prevalence of TDIs was 29.9%. The most affected tooth was the upper right central incisor (45.4%). Regarding hard tissue and supporting tissue trauma, enamel crack (64%) and concussion (92.9%) were the most prevalent, respectively. Babies evaluated in both periods, 36.8% underwent TDIs at both times. The prevalence of oral trauma was 55.3% at 12 months and 76.8% at 24 months, and the prevalence of LDTs was 21.5% and 31.4%, respectively. At 24 months of follow-up, there was a statistically significant association between TDIs and pacifier use (p=0.008), however there was no association with occlusion characteristics. In the babies evaluated in both periods, there was a statistically significant association with breastfeeding (p=0.004), use of a pacifier (p=0.008) and the frequency of use of bottles feeding (p=0.04). Regarding the demand for dental care-seeking, only 1.6% and 6.2% of mothers reported to seek dental care at 12 and 24 months, respectively. It is concluded that the prevalence of orofacial trauma and TDIs was high and there was an increase in the prevalence of TDIs with age. The results confirm an association between the use of artificial teats and discontinuation of breastfeeding.
