| Abstract: | The present dissertation focus on the presentation of the hypothesis that there is a lack of identification between the terms "element" and "material cause" in Aristotle's Metaphysics, as well as for the treatment of a of the most relevant questions to be answered. This is: how should the evident identification between "element" and "material cause" be considered in Aristotle's analysis of his predecessors in the book Alpha of Metaphysics? Since our hypothesis precisely defends the conceptual difference between the two terms, resolving this issue is essential. To arrive at this resolution, we followed the thesis of Timothy J. Crowley (2013), who states, among other things, that fire, earth, water and air, as thought by the naturalists before Aristotle, identify with what Aristotle himself considered as fire, earth, water and air only through homonymy. Apart from the name, the two groups of bodies are not classified as being of the same species. Those postulated by naturalists refer to bodies directly observable by the senses, and therefore composed. When they refer to fire, they mean that of an oven, for example. Whereas Aristotle refers to a simple fire considered as a middle ground between being and not being sensitive. When, in his analysis of the theory of his predecessors in De Generatione et Corruptione II. 3, Aristotle claims that fire, earth, water and air are composite bodies, he is performing a similar procedure that we see at the Metaphysics A 3, from which it is possible, mistakenly, to suppose an identification between the concepts of element and material cause. |
