Abstract:	The main objective of the research is to identify the treatment given to postpositional phrases in research already carried out by different authors in languages of the Tupí-Guaraní branch. The topic is in line with a larger project, aimed at classifying languages in a typological perspective, which seeks to understand how the distinction between arguments and adjuncts has been made in research on Brazilian indigenous languages. At the current stage, we undertake a bibliographic review on three languages, Kamaiurá, Apyãwa (Tapirapé), and Guajá, carried out based on a research protocol that we developed. We summarize the views and the recurring criteria employed by the specialists in each language and offer new analysis proposals. When evaluated by exclusively formal criteria, postpositional phrases tend to be classified as adjuncts. However, when examining the data and terminologies used by different authors, we realize that such phrases establish a syntactic, semantic, and also pragmatic link with the sentence. In some situations, the postpositional phrases are required by the semantic of the predicate, resembling semantic arguments, even when they receive formal adjunct marks. In others, they are required neither by semantics nor by syntax, but by pragmatics. In addition to the argument and adjunct functions, we identify one more function of the postpositional phrases, that of predicate. However, we identify few prototypical examples of predicate, argument or adjunct. Based on this and on the evidence provided by the specialists themselves, we adopt an approach based on the prototype theory and propose two scales or continuum to represent the functions of the postpositional phrases: the first, between prototypical arguments at one end and prototypical adjuncts at the other; the second, including the predicate function as the most nuclear, with the [+NUCLEAR] pole at one end and the [+PERIPHERY] at the other. Among the prototypically nuclear uses and the prototypically peripheral uses, it is possible to propose a complex gradation of different uses, with emphasis on the central functions of argument and quasi-argument. All analysis proposals, as well as scales, are hypotheses, intended for future research, which need to be verified by language specialists.
