| Abstract: | The contemporaneous critical thought in the field of communication, in Brazil and in the rest of Latin America, within the Frankfurt tradition, present two main lines: the studies that refer to the dominant systems of communication and those that refer to the alternative proposals of communication. This division along two lines has brought the disadvantage of decreasing our capacity to understand the reality of communication in Brazil as well as to act, over it. That is why we are proposing a mean of unification of the two lines, by considering them, from the standpoint of a specific interpretation, as part of the same utopie project. The two lines, even though they move in opposite directions within the debate over the relation between communication and power, are inserted into that perspective which claims for a change in the traditional scheme of predominance of the source over the receiver, while demanding a scheme in which b oth have the same role in the communication process. This change signifies the creation of a communication paradigm in opposition to the paradigm that prevailed up to the 1970s. That prevailing paradigm emphasized the dichotomy source/receiver, legitimating the dominant position of the source (in this case, the bourgeois sector owning the media). Communication, then, only starts to exist when the dichotomy is surpassed. The surpassing of the dichotomy, however, does not happen in a vacuum: it implies the simultaneous surpassing of the broader social relation that exists between oppressors and oppressed, leading to a new society. Communication is an essencial element of the utopic model because it represents the very nature of its social relations, which will take place in collaboration. It is this ideation of "another society" of another man, therefore, the point in which the new paradigm inscribes the communication process, according to the redefinition it was submitted to, along the utopic tradition. But because it is a utopia, the new communication process does not respect the geo-political frontiers and becomes the goal of any social system in which the authoritarian power is installed. It was seen that utopia is the historical realization of the principles of dialectical logic, which does not admit stagnation and the end of the given-real. Utopia, because it is dialectical, bets on the transcendence of the given-real toward all the possibilites which the real possesses. It is the permanent trend toward change - and for better - becoming something constitutive of history. Utopia and the dialectical basis are also present in the line of thought of the researchers from Frankfurt, when they denounce all the forms of authoritarianism and propose, in several ways, new forms of social living, beyond the conflict of classes, the dictatorship of economics and the organizational chaos. In the field of communication, the Frankfurtian thought produced a profound critique of the bourgeois (mainly) communicational system, within the concept of "cultural industry". Such critique served as matrix to start, at the level of Latin America, a radical line of criticism of the communicational inequalities existing in each country and also in international relations. But such criticism was parted along the two lines already mentioned: an atack on the dominant systems and the struggle for the appearance of alternative communication systems. The conclusion was that, given the need to have a global, non-dichotomized perspective of these critical studies of communication, the concept of utopia was used to give shape to such perspective, starting from the utopian notion that the ultimate sense which the two trends point to is the redefinition of communication, seen as an exclusive act of subjects who possess a basic equality among them. Through utopia, the individuals go from the status of objects in the communication process to the status of communicators, whose existence is only possible in the proper locus for communication: the community. Finally, we raise the possibility of - starting from the use of the category utopia for the analysis of communicational processes - expending such use to phenomena situated in the realm of the social sciences in general, due to the richness and openess which that category prossesses. |
