Abstract: Important transformations, in cities and metropolises, have been occurring as regards the population profile, the historical processes of sociability and the social configuration of human relations. Population aging, in this context, represents potentialities and challenges for public policies. Among the challenges is the social isolation of older adults, which has been pointed out as one of the consequences of this new way of being in the world and concerns the decline in the quality and quantity of social interactions in everyday life. This phenomenon has the potential to influence the perception of life satisfaction and to change morbidity and mortality indicators. Objective: Overall, this study aims at analysing the situation of social isolation among the older adults in the Brazilian Federal District, with a view to trying to understand the subjective and socio-historical features that have the potential to foster social isolation. Method: The adopted theoretical and methodological proposal has a mixed approach, of a cross-sectional and analytical nature. Two stages were set: i) a quantitative study, with a survey of sociodemographic issues, application of the UCLA Loneliness Scale and of the Lubben Social Network Scale by means of a convenience sample of 100 older persons, aged 60 years or more; ii) a qualitative study by means of an integrative literature review and in-depth interviews of life-history and oral-history type with nine older adults, in which subjectivity aspects were studied. The entire study adopts the theoretical reference of ageism, a construct that enables understanding the barriers, prejudices and stereotypes of the most diverse sorts which compromise the experience of plenitude in old age and may affect the social interaction of the older person. Results: i) the integrative review evidenced that social isolation is a reality and is present in numerous cities and different cultures; furthermore, it demonstrated the objectivity of the concept that is related to the quantity and quality of social interactions; ii) the quantitative study showed that older black men, with low income and little education, with health problems and resident in long-stay institutions have a higher risk of social isolation; iii) the in-depth narratives highlighted the complexity of aging and showed that there is a system of structuring oppression in the older person's social life. The results are presented by articles and a video documentary. Conclusion: The demands and needs of the aging population are heterogeneous and diverse. Ageism is identified as a factor that can increase social isolation, but it must be analysed in articulation with the dynamics in the cities and the family experiences, religiosity, money, work and housing as structuring elements for social interaction. Older people present desires for new achievements that are not supported by the characteristics of society and the life dynamics that are present today. Public policies in the areas of health, urban planning and housing need to be reviewed in light of the diversity and heterogeneity of the aging processes.
