Abstract: Sustainability is the continuous use of components of a program and its activities aiming at beneficial results for the population. This master's thesis examined the mechanisms that contribute to or impair the sustainability of public health interventions in Latin America and, in particular, of the Strengthening Families Program (SFP) in Brazil. Two studies were carried out on the subject. The first consisted of an integrative review that analyzed the factors that facilitate and inhibit the sustainability of public health interventions in countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. The review included 29 scientific articles from interventions in Latin American countries published between the years 2000 and 2018 in English, Portuguese and Spanish journals. The findings of this review indicated that the factors that contribute to the sustainability of public health interventions in Latin American countries are partnerships, communication, political support, impacts on public health, assessment, organizational capacity and strategic planning. On the other hand, the factors that impair sustainability are financial instability, lack of political support and ineffective organizational capacity. The second study investigated mechanisms that make feasible or hinde the sustainability of the Strengthening Families Program (SFP), a Brazilian adaptation of an American program of parenting skills and social skills for parents and adolescents (10 to 14 years old) with a view to preventing drug abuse. A descriptive design was adopted, in which seven managers responsible for the management of the SFP in the states of Acre, Distrito Federal, Pernambuco, Ceará and Paraná participated, who answered an online questionnaire. Of these seven participants, two also responded to a remotely applied narrative interview. The data were analyzed through deductive thematic analysis, based on the categories fund stability, impacts on public health, political support, partnerships, communication, organizational capacity, program adaptation, program evaluation and strategic planning. The results showed that in all states the implementation of the SFP was discontinued, with two states interrupting it in 2017 (Acre and Pernambuco), two in 2018 (Ceará and Distrito Federal) and one in 2019 (Paraná). Fund instability, lack of political support, deficient organizational capacity and difficulty in incorporating into the organizational routine were identified as barriers to sustainability. The dimensions organizational capacity, program adaptation, political support, program evaluation and partnerships were cited as essential for the sustainability of the Strong Families Program in all territories. Although discontinued, positive legacies of the PFF were mentioned by participants from four of the states, including professional training in the field of prevention for workers in the Unified Social Assistance System (SUAS) and Unified Health System (SUS). In conclusion, data from both studies reveal that losses in financial resources, political support and organizational capacity act as barriers to the sustainability of public health interventions in Latin America and also of the Strengthening Families Program in Brazil.
