Abstract:	It addresses the study of prospecting for information skills in the management of the Brazilian waterway transport sector. It aims to explore what information skills are required for managers who take care of the Brazilian inland waterway transport sector policy at the National Department of Transport Infrastructure (DNIT), seeking to identify and assess the information sources in the sector, with an additional proposal to map the current situation of information skills and analyze the profile of professionals in the strategic and tactical management of the inland waterway transport sector in Brazil under the DNIT. Through a theoretical approach, it identifies, in the study of prospecting for information skills, the capacities and skills that must be improved in the federal officials of the researched area, thus allowing to analyze and critically evaluate the information obtained, since the relevant, accurate and originating information from reliable information sources, make it possible to plan and assist in decision making and sectoral policy definitions. For this purpose, a qualitative case study was carried out as a research modality, understood as a method or as the choice of a study object defined by the interest in individual cases. The choice for this type is due to the small number of participants in the sample, eight federal officials, who represent the management sectors of waterway transport in Brazil. The methodology used the data collection method, through the technique of structured interviews with the application of a questionnaire composed of open and closed questions in order to serve as a guide for conducting the proposed interviews. Qualitative methods were prioritized concomitant to the assumptions that guide and enable the study of the research problem. This definition seeks to elaborate prospective scenarios of the information skills necessary for the professional, as a manager of Brazilian inland waterway transport. The result is the proposal for prospecting information skills to fill the informational gaps in the skills list of the sector, contributing to the continuous improvement in Brazilian inland waterway transport management, in order to achieve greater investments and optimization of infrastructure operating and maintenance expenses.
