Abstract:	Over time, numerous studies on distress and coping have been undertaken in Psycho-oncology. In this area, it is called distress, the psychological suffering of multifactorial origin, related to the diagnosis and oncological treatments. As for coping, the clinical interest in monitoring cancer patients persists, due to the need to encourage more adaptive strategies, in view of their psychosocial needs, notably those related to gender and the stages of development of the life cycle. Considering such scientific and care concerns, an investigation was carried out with the general objective of describing, evaluating and comparing distress and coping of adult women and elderly women, diagnosed with cancer. Participated in the study, 21 women who underwent chemotherapy treatment in a private specialized center, located in the Federal District and who had the following diagnoses: breast (n = 10), stomach (n = 3), ovary (n = 3), cervix (n = 2), intestine (n = 1), lung (n = 1) and pancreas (n = 1) cancer. As instruments of data collection, the following were used: Distress Thermometer (TD), Ways of Coping Checklist (adapted version) Sociodemographic Questionnaire and Semi-structured Interview. Two subsamples were constituted, according to the age group: Group A - nine patients between 20 and 50 years of age (M = 40.5; SD = 4.1); and Group B - 12 patients between 51 and 80 years of age (M = 61.0; SD = 11.5). Quantitative data were subjected to descriptive and inferential statistical analysis. The results obtained showed higher levels of distress in adult women (M = 5.67; SD = 3.35), compared to elderly women (M = 4.08; SD = 2.31). As for elderly women, there was a higher proportion of physical problems (fatigue and congested nose) identified by TD. The general analysis of the studied sample (N = 21) revealed a predominance of the coping strategy 'focused on the problem'. 10 patients participated in the interviews, due to the difficulties associated with the context of data collection (social distancing established by the clinic), which was conducted during Covid-19 pandemic. The reports obtained were categorized into two general axes ‘coping strategies’ and ‘stress’, which were organized around the following themes: diagnostic phase, treatment, family and work. It was possible to notice negative conceptions of patients regarding treatment. For a better characterization of the specificities linked to gender and human development, it is recommended that future studies analyze age groups with a shorter interval of time. Multicenter studies are also recommended in order to broaden the understanding of socio-cultural aspects.
