| Abstract: | Pyrolysis treatment has been presented as a sustainable alternative to enable the agricultural use of sewage sludge. The solid product of the pyrolysis of this residue is called sewage sludge biochar (SSBC). An increasing number of studies has shown several agronomic and environmental benefits from its application in soil. These benefits are mainly influenced by the pyrolysis temperature and the type of soil in which SSBC is applied. Most of these studies have been conducted over a short period of time and usually in pots. Thus, as the properties of biochar change over time, there are still doubts about its long-term behavior and dynamics. Therefore, understanding what are the effects of the application of SSBC and its duration is essential to enable the use of this technology in agriculture. The objective of this study was to assess the temporal effect of SSBCs produced at different temperatures on soil fertility and environmental indicators in field conditions, also evaluating the effects of their association with mineral fertilization. For this purpose, an experiment with application of 15 t ha-1 of SSBC in each of the first two growing seasons was evaluated over five consecutive years. The following treatments were evaluated: control (without biochar and without mineral fertilization); mineral fertilization (NPK); application of SSBC pyrolized at 300°C (BC300); and at 500°C (BC500); BC300+NPK; BC500+NPK. The following properties were also determined: pH, H+Al, total N, available P, K, Ca, Mg, macronutrients leaf content, total and available heavy metals (HM) content. The grain yield was also estimated. Over five years, SSBCs increased the total N and the available P content of the soil. However, the exclusive application of SSBC did not provide enough K for corn. The combination of SSBC with mineral NPK fertilizer provided all the macronutrients for corn, in addition to increasing their leaf contents, especially of P. Due to these improvements in the nutritional status of the soil and plants, there was an average increase of 16% in grain yield in soils with BC300+NPK. Regarding HMs, the availability of non-nutritional elements (Cd, Cr, Ni and Pb) was not affected by the treatments. The only elements whose availability increased were those with nutritional function for plants (Co, Cu, Mn and Zn). In general, the biochars pyrolyzed at different temperatures presented similar behavior on the evaluated parameters. Therefore, the pyrolysis of this sewage sludge of domestic origin proved to be an adequate strategy to supply nutrients to the soil, especially P and Zn, without risk of contamination by HMs. |
