Abstract: This ethnography focuses on the Sanumá, a Yanomami subgroup located on the upper Auaris River, in the northernmost state of Roraima in Brazil. It explores the most central aspects of their vast and complex cosmology by discussing the components of the person, of non-human beings, and shamanism. Together these aspects of the Sanumá system of ideas unveil two major themes. One, metamorphism, refers to the process through which the cosmos and its beings were created and are maintained by means of their constant transformations. Two, the physicality of non-worldly dimensions, that is, the reality of cosmos and beings whose concreteness can only be revealed via the shaman’s capacity to make visible what would otherwise be imperceptible to the senses of non-shamans.
