Abstract: This thesis has as its central theme the distinction between Natural Sciences and Cultural Sciences in the thought of Ernst Cassirer. The general interrogation was to analyze whether the process of mathematization of knowledge, a founding characteristic of modern natural science, can serve as a criterion of epistemic evaluation for the cultural sciences or whether they, in turn, operate in a diverse and immeasurable way in the face of advances in knowledge about nature. With his philosophy of symbolic forms, Cassirer recognizes the symmetry of the different ways of objectification in the natural and cultural sciences, not favoring one type of knowledge over another. However, in part II of his Essay on Man, he argues that the natural sciences are the most advanced enterprise of culture. This suggestion leads us to suspect that the way of proceeding of the natural sciences could act as a kind of ideal of symbolic reason. If so, what kind of symmetry could be established between the various symbolic forms? It is proposed here, therefore, an examination of the possibility of, from Cassirer's work, building the defense of some kind of systematic hierarchization between the symbolic forms that build the world of natural objects and the symbolic forms that engender the spirit world. In the end, we see that symbolic forms and particular sciences must be understood as irreducible and immeasurable structures, but that, despite their profound constitutive differences, they can only be understood in the dynamic relationship they maintain with each other. Philosophy’s task is to understand and analyze the differences that mark the several versions of symbolism, to recognize the diverse objectivity arising from the functional power of symbolic reason, and to propose a systematic treatment of the plurality of cultural production.
