Abstract: In general, engineering problems are governed by differential equations that do not have analytical solutions for complex geometries and boundary conditions. Therefore, numerical methods are highly important, since they lead to accurate approximate solutions. However, the most well regarded numerical methods currently rely on a mesh for the discretization step. The process of creating the mesh has a high computational cost. In addition, the need of a mesh can lead to other problems, such as obtaining distorted elements during the process and depending on a complicated remeshing process when dealing with non-linear problems. In this context, Mesh-free (or Meshless) methods are very interesting, since they do not require connectivity between nodes to approximate variables. The present work presents the formulation of a new Boundary Mesh-Free Method (BMFM), with applications to two-dimensional potential problems governed by the Laplace equation. This method eliminates the need of a mesh to approximate the variables by using the shape forms of the Moving Least Squares method. It also limits the need of discretization of the body by using the boundary integral equations in its formulation. Aiming to overcome the usual limitations of Meshless methods (the dependency on arbitrary discretization parameters and nodal distributions), this work associates the BMFM formulation to a multi-objective optimization process. The optimization, carried out by Genetic Algorithms, automatically generates Pareto-optimal discretizations. Thus, there is no need for human intervention on the discretization process. The optimization process uses efficient objective functions, which reassure that the model functions well without the analytical solution being necessary. At the end of the work, BMFM was applied to three two-dimensional potential benchmark problems, governed by the Laplace equation, so that its efficiency and accuracy could be evaluated. The results obtained were in perfect agreement with the analytical solutions, which shows that this modelling strategy is reliable.
