Abstract: This thesis is composed by three chapters organized as three independent articles, though interconnected by a common line. The aim of this investigation comprises the study of structural change and sectoral interconnection of the economic system and its impact on productivity and economic growth. To achieve such task, the first chapter studies Baumol's (1967) unbalanced growth model using a Pasinettian framework of structural change. Thus, following the contribution of Notarangelo (1999), it is shown that Baumol's two-sector model can be seen as a particular case of the Pasinettian model of structural change [Pasinetti (1981, 1993)]. Furthermore, following the suggestion laid by Notarangelo (1999) the model is extended to an arbitrary number of sectors. Indeed, it is possible to assess under which sectorial assumptions of supply and demand Baumol's results remain valid. Finally, following Oulton's (2001) investigation, the presence of intermediate goods is included in the model, which can reverse the model's conclusions, such as economic and productivity stagnation. In addition, it is shown that Oulton’s (2001) model can also be seen as a particular case of the Pasinettian model. The second chapter consists of an empirical investigation on the growth rate of the sectoral and aggregate productivity of the Brazilian economy between 2000 and 2014. To do so, the Domar aggregation method is used [Jorgeson et al. (1987), Hulten (2009)], which measures the direct and indirect effects of the productivity change of each sector for the economy as a whole. Considering the aggregate economy, it is concluded that the density, or degree of interconnection between the sectors of the Brazilian economy, has decreased since the 2008 crisis, which implies a decrease in the potential of the indirect channel of technical progress. Regarding the three main macro sectors - manufacturing industries, primary industries and services - the sector with the highest average productivity advance was the primary sector, however this sector has low density and, therefore, little potential to spread its positive growth to the rest of the economy. The manufacturing sector, although it was the sector with the highest degree of interconnection and potential for spreading productivity, presented negative average productivity growth rates in the period, thus propagating a decrease in productivity. The service sector, in turn, presented intermediate results, with low average growth in productivity and relatively high density. Finally, in the third and last chapter, we start from the Pasinetti’s (1988) structural change model of vertically integrated sectors with uneven growth, that has Sraffian inspiration, but allows the sectors to grow at different rates. The conventional hypothesis that the labour coefficients are fixed is modified, in such a way that the technical change from the industries affects the productivity growth of the vertically integrated sectors in an explicit and formal way. This represents a formal derivation that takes into account the criticisms of authors such as Schefold (1987), Lavoie (1997) and Hagemann (2007). They argue that the productivity of vertically integrated sectors should not be seen as being independent from one another, since productivity growth takes place from the industries level. In this vein, we deliver a formal measure of sectoral productivity growth, in which the labour productivity growth that accrues from the industries affects the vertically integrated sectors composed by them. This measure of productivity growth can be also considered as a substitute for the inverse of the maximum eigenvalue of the Sraffian system, which is no longer valid in the case of uneven growth among sectors. In addition, an equation for the price growth rate of vertically integrated sectors is derived, in such a way that prices rise inversely in proportion to technical progress.
