Abstract:	Objectives: To evaluate the factors that determine the level of knowledge based on evidence acquired by university students about medicinal plants, first-aid techniques, and contents taught in undergraduate courses in the health area. Methods: Three studies were developed. A questionnaire with questions about the use of, and knowledge about, medicinal plants was given to university students from four majors in the health/biology area. Another questionnaire had questions about the use of, and knowledge about, first aid to university students from five majors in the area of Health/Life Sciences and five majors in the area of Human/Social Sciences. The third questionnaire was given to Pharmacy students about the education of their parents and the level of affection they received in early childhood, and their answers were correlated with their grades in undergraduate courses. Results: Study 1. Most of the students reported having used medicinal plants, most of which had no adverse effect and had positive effects. Their knowledge of medicinal plants came mostly from sources of information not based on evidence. Self-use occurred largely (42%) without prior research. Study 2. Most students reported not having participated in first-aid training and not knowing any technique. Despite this fact, many students (32-51%) stated that they feel able to help in an emergency. The knowledge about first aid by students who take courses that are related to first aid, such as Anatomy and Physiology, was not greater than that of students in the area of Human Sciences, who do not take such courses in their undergraduate studies. Study 3. There was no correlation between education level, or the selfdeclared level of affection received by students with their' grades. Conclusion: This thesis allows us to conclude that: (i) many university students in the health/biology field use medicinal plants without evidence-based information; (ii) taking Anatomy and Physiology courses in majors in the area of Health/Life Sciences is not enough to cause a higher level of knowledge about first aid than that of students of Human/Social Sciences; and (iii) the learning and grades in higher education of the Pharmacy students evaluated seem to be determined mostly by other factors than by the education level of their parents or by the self-declared affection received by them. Such information supports the recommendation that we should encourage the search for information based on evidence and the adoption of methodological practices that reduce the gaps in knowledge pointed out in the studies.
