Abstract:	Microplastics are characterized by being plastic particles less than 5 mm in size. Currently microplastics are ubiquitous in the environment, being found inside our homes, in the external environment of our homes, in our work, food, water, in the air we breathe and inside living terrestrial and aquatic organisms. Due to its wide distribution in the environment, the capacity for adsorption and dispersion of organic and chemical contaminants (some typical of its constitution and others adsorbed in the environment), its ingestion by organisms at the base of the food chain that undergo bioaccumulation and biomagnification, the effects caused in the health of living beings such as inflammation, obstruction and chronic intoxication of the affected organisms and the effects still unknown for human health. Thus, we seek, in this context, to identify the presence of microplastics in tap water intended for consumption, this being the first work carried out in Brasilia that addresses this theme, and which also aims to raise the discussion of microplastics and its implications for the environment. and for human health. Thus, we evaluated the occurrence of these residues in tap water samples collected in the blocks of the Plano Piloto an Administrative Region of Brasília - Federal District. Samples of microplastics were collected in all blocks of the Plano Piloto, in amber bottles previously cleaned. Particles smaller than 5 mm were isolated by flotation. The qualitative and quantitative analysis was determined by manual counting in a Sedgewick Rafter chamber, after adding the Nile Red dye, using fluorescence microscopy. The results obtained pointed to the presence of microplastics in all tap water samples in the Plano Piloto region, thus showing the consequence of the high consumption of plastic material, mainly for single use and its inadequate disposal by the population, problems in the treatment plants of water that does not enjoy modern strategies for removing microplastics from water intended for consumption and legislation that act on this topic protecting the community in the consumption, production and disposal of plastic material.
