| Abstract: | The 2015 Zika virus epidemic was a milestone in the history of Brazil, having affected the poorest regions of the country most severely. Thousands of people were affected by the disease, having disproportionately impacted vulnerable women and girls and their children born with congenital Zika syndrome. The outbreak of the Zika virus in Brazil has aggravated old and well-known problems of human rights and citizenship, also highlighting the relationship between the epidemic and social inequality. In view of the magnitude and repercussion of this humanitarian tragedy, there is an urgent need for research on the topic in several areas, in order to combat new epidemics. Thus, the general objective of the present study was to investigate how social inequality produced the 2015 Zika virus epidemic in Brazil. For this purpose, official data about the per capita monthly household income and the numbers on the Zika virus infection and the congenital Zika syndrome of each federation unit were used, as well as studies of great magnitude on the epidemic in the country. Thus, the data were analyzed using a quantitative and qualitative approach, considering the social, political and economic context for a better understanding and interpretation of the phenomenon. The results found demonstrated a negative correlation between per capita monthly household income with Zika infection, as well as with cases of congenital Zika syndrome, corroborating the statement in the field of public health that social inequality produces illness processes, having been capable of producing the 2015 Zika virus epidemic in Brazil. |
