| Abstract: | This thesis surveys the urban experience of a group of children living in Brasilia, the Federal District, focusing on the relation between their daily mobility, their use of public spaces and the city urban design. Studies point to an increase in the number of people living in cities in the west, and indicate that urbanization leads to a fragmented childhood experience. From this perspective, a particular attention needs to be paid to the study of the possibilities and limitations of children's educational experiences in city areas. This thesis provides an in-depth qualitative research of urbanized childhoods with an ethnographic approach. Understanding the needs of children, and drawing on the theoretical framework of sociological studies of children and childhood, we understand that children are “experts” in what it concerns their own lives, and act as social agents who make choices for themselves in authentic ways. As data collection technique, the researcher accompanied individual children in their way to school or other places for seven consecutive days (from Monday to Sunday), tracked their routes with Google Maps, while the children recorded their paths with GoPro cameras. Following this, each child was interviewed and asked to make an online participatory map of the city using Google Earth, indicating the places of interest for them. This thesis reaches the following main conclusions: 1) Children's mobility is negotiated and performed in dependent and interdependent ways, being contingent on family routines and travel companions; 2) The Superquadras’ public spaces enhance sociability traits for the boys and girls who use them daily; 3) Children have overcome physical limitations and virtually explored space using Google Earth, marking on their maps the places they like, dislike and would like to visit; 4) There are several ethical implications when working with GPS, maps and intimacy of children and their families; 5) Combining different research procedures helps to better understand the lives of children in the city, and to emphasize more detailed aspects of their educational experiences in the public realm. It is concluded that children living in Brasilia are privileged for its urban design and have the opportunity to live, learn and socialize in common areas, ‘building’ the city both individually and collectively, and assigning meanings to public spaces in order to transform them into personal places. Simultaneously, children's cartographies demonstrate their knowledge and perceptions of different locations, indicating that Brasilia presents itself to them as a complex, imaginative, consumer-oriented and playful social landscape. |
