| Abstract: | The objective of this study is to analyze the Catholicism in Brazil through the eyes of those who consider themselves to be non-practicing Catholics. As per the 2010 census, Catholicism is the religion with the greateast number of adherents in Brazil; this study intends to understand how the non-practicing group functions, so we can have a better understanding on how the Catholic religion works in Brazil. With this in mind, I have tried to understand which are the current religious practices of this particular group, which ones were dismissed, and the reasons why the individuals feel identified and still attached to the religion. This research was based on methodological interviews, through specific questions and conversations, with 11 individuals that consider themselves to be non-practicing Catholics. As a result, three main characteristics of the non-practicing Catholics were identified: The first is a strong childhood socialization within the Catholic culture, which gives the individuals a basic knowledge of rituals and understanding of the Catholic terminology. The second is about aspects of religion that become secularized by the individuals, so that they feel supported by religion into the adult life while developing their own understanding, as happens with the notion of spirituality. The third concerns the exclusion of any kind of religious authority (Bibles, dogmas, priests), which indicates again experiencing religion with a personal understanding. This analysis is complemented with an association of this category of Catholics with the colonization process in Brazil, that had Catholicism as a main instrument of its legitimization. The existence of these Catholics in Brazil seems to have a connection with our colonial heritage, as during the colonization religion was a symbol of status, and a lot of obedience to norms and little understanding of the religious content was used to keep religion alive and dominant in Brazil. By doing this research, I conclude that something similar is still going on today with those that identify themselves as non-practicing Catholics. |
