| Abstract: | The Brazilian newspaper Correio Braziliense, published in Brasilia, the nation’s capital, has inherited nothing but its name from its predecessor, Correio Braziliense, Brazil’s first newspaper, which was founded in 1808 by Hipólito da Costa and remained in circulation until 1822. The name was rescued from historical oblivion in 1960 by Assis Chateaubriand, a journalist and owner of Diários Associados, a newspaper and broadcasting network to which the Correio Braziliense is affiliated. It is clear that Correio Braziliense does not have a tradition comparable to the major newspapers from the Rio - São Paulo axis. Nevertheless, it has been able to conquer its own space within the spectrum of Brazilian daily newspapers. At the same time, it follows a line of close identification with Brasilia. Its editorial policy has changed along the years, moving from an attitude of support to local authorities to a more confrontational stance in the recent past. Its editorial structure has recently undergone significant changes, which were clearly and explicitly explained to the readers. The present work shows the results of a research on the history of Correio Braziliense since its foundation, which was concomitant to the inauguration of Brasilia as the nation’s capital. Account was taken or political, economic, social and cultural aspects of the city over this period of time. To that end, the following parameters proved relevant: composition of the board of directors, editorial policy, editorial structure, production routines, infrastructure, target-group, circulation and human resources. In order to highlight the newspaper’s editorial policy, the analysis was focused on the Correio Braziliense’s coverage of five relevant facts in the capital city’s history, with emphasis on the following aspects: chronology of facts, context, development of the news coverage, editorial policy and the newspaper’s efforts to establish an identity closely associated with the city and its population. |
