| Abstract: | The Extension Service of "Federaciõn Nacional de Cafeteros de Colombia" (National Federation of Coffee Growers of Colombia) has been utilizing, for about nine years, a working strategy called "Friendship Groups". In the beginning of 1978, there were, in all coffee growing areas of Colombia, some 4,200 organized Groups, with a total of 45 thousand members. One of the ultimate aims of the program is to promote the relative independence of the Group members from the direct influence of the extension worker, so that the individuais will gradually seek to solve their problems by themselves. Thus, it is expected that within a given length of time... two to three years... the Group members become able to handle most technical problems relating to coffee growing. The present study was designed to know the level of technological independence achieved by the Group members and what factors could be related to a higher or lower level of independence. In the review of the literature an attempt was made to show that the organization of the social structure in general, and the peasant social structure in particular, gives origin to multiple factors of dependence. The technology brought in by the extension worker is but one of these factors. The study was conducted in the "Departamento de Huila" (State of Huila), located in the South-Central region of Colombia, where the data available at the end of 1977 showed the existence of 258 Friendship Groups, with a total of 2,277 members. The sample was made up of 30 Groups, allowing for a total of 267 respondents. In summary, the study showed that the Program Friendship Groups is leading the participants to a gradual technological independence with respect to the extension worker. It was also found that of the 18 variables used to explain this higher on lower level of technological independence, 12 were associated with the dependent variable(techno logical independence). These 12 variables were: age, ability to handle written codes, multiplying activities, Group participation, area cultivated with new coffee trees, credit utilization, exposure to mass media, intra-group communication, complexity of innovations, knowledge of messages about the Groups, ownership of written material about coffee growing and number of years the extension worker spent in the area. |
