Abstract:	The present research collects, analyzes and interprets 2,658 letters published in the "Letters to the Editor" section of ten Brazilian newspapers during the months of April, May, and June of 2003. The aim of the work is to understand the realm of the "Letters to the Editor" section through the correspondence of readers and to construct a profile of that subset of readers who write to the newspaper and who are called here "manifest readers". By means of a close reading of the letters to the editor, bolstered by the methodology of "content analysis," the study concludes that the reader of the printed page - the one who writes to the paper - is seeking through this means of communication a sort of mediation: he wants the newspaper to be a forum for debate on the ambit of the public sphere. The reader wants to participate and fights for a little platform in this immense public arena. But this reader also wants solutions and searches in the newspaper a intermediator who will defend his or her interests against the federal or state governments and even against private business corporations. And this same reader, dressed as an orphan or as a rebel (or as a nonconformist), often makes use of the newspaper to complain about newspaper itself, making strong criticisms of the media's failure to fulfill its social function as an agent of transformation. The analysis of the letters demonstrates fürther that the "voice of the streets" manifests itself in the "letters to the editor" column and seeks in this space a fertile field not only to stimulate criticism but also to develop a process of interactivity by means of "delayed dialog".
