| Abstract: | This work is a theoretical-experimental study on the capacity of plastic rotation in reinforced concrete beams. Four continuous beam were tested up to the rupture. Two of these beams had a compression resistance equal to fc = 37 MPa and reinforcement ratio w = 11%, and the two other beams fc = 50 MPa and w = 16%. The continuous beams had two span (3 supports named A-C-E) and two point loads acting in the middle of spans AC and CE. The maximum moment takes place in the critical section over support C. This critical section will show the first plastic hinge. The continuous beams were designed according to the bending moment diagram diverging in 11% with respect to the original moment diagram which were obtained from a previous elastic analysis. Four isostatic, simply supported, beams were also tested. Such beams were designed adopting a cross section with the same geometrical dimensions and reinforcement ratio as used in the critical section of the contínuos beams (over support B). Moreover, the span of the simply supported beams was taken equal to the distance between the zero moments observed in the first (AC) and second (CE) spans of contínuos beams enclosing the first plastic hinge that took place over the support C. The main objectives of the tests undertaken in this study were: a) verification of the adaptation of the continuous beams to the bending moment diagrams adopted; b) obtain the plastification spread length around the critical section, c) measure the rotation capacity of the critical section of the continuous beams though the deflection of the simply supported beams and also throughout the integral of the curvature along the plastification length of the critical section of the continuous beams; d) compare the results here obtained with the theoretical and semi-empirical studies available in the literature and in the experimental work developed by Silva (1977). Based on the studies here undertaken a good adaptation of the continuous beams to the bending moment diagrams was observed. Also, the plastic rotation capacity obtained from the experimental tests showed a great dispersion when compared with the theoretical values available in the literature. In addition, we noticed that the experimental results showed a smaller plastification length and also a smaller plastic rotation capacity of the beams with 50 MPa of compression resistance when compared with the beams with 37 MPa. |
