| Abstract: | Nowadays, there has been an increasing attention concerning the life time of reinforced concrete structures. Among other factors, the durability of such structures depends on the adequacy of concrete to face the environment aggressiveness and, accordingly, avoid the corrosion of the reinforcements. However, in regions with high aggressiveness - where corrosion due to chloride or carbonation is a constant threat - beside the adequate quality of the concrete, additional procedures are also needed. In this context, the concrete surface painting - with appropriate materials - may be an efficient alternative in the prevention against corrosion for either the new or old repaired structure. It is very difficult to classify surface painting products according to its protection efficiency against corrosion ofthe reinforcement. This work tries to evaluate the protection efficiency of painting products. The evaluation is done throughout the investigation of three paintings made of polyurethane resins. One of the paintings investigated is produced from "mamona" oil that is a resin material very abundant in Brazil and with great economic potential. To reduce the experimental time, accelerated aging techniques were employed in the tests. For the accelerated carbonation test, the specimens were placed in saturated CO2 atmosphere produced by periodic flow of CO2 gas. For the corrosion tests by chloride effect, the specimens were partially submerged and submitted to dry/wet cycles, in salt solution at 5% of sodium chloride. The evaluation of the efficiency of the paintings was achieved through the polarization Resistance technique. The parameters analyzed were Iccor, Ecorr, and Rohm and, the variation of the specimen mass. It was also compared the gravimetric and electrochemical losses at the end of the tests. In addition, complementary data was obtained for the chloride diffusion test performed with the potential difference technique. In this work, the above described methodologies allowed us to compare the efficiency of the three painting products examined. The scope of the study was to find the product that best protects concrete structures against CO2 and chloride penetration. We observed that the painting product based on “mamona” oil resin has presented a superior performance compared with the two other products analyzed. |
