Abstract: It is growing the concem about the use of techniques and repair materiais that should provide a considerable Service life to the structure. In this sense the addition of silica fume in repair mortars comes as an efficient altemative, mainly in the acting of the strength and in the reduction of the porosity. The objective of this research is to study the behavior of mortars with addition of silica íume for structural repairs especially approaching the occurrence of cracks caused by drying shrikage. The process of repair of the concrete structures is reviewed, including the evaluation of the structure, the cau ses of its deterioration, methods of concrete repair considering the basic preparation, selection of the materiais, the materiais characteristics considering the effectiveness of the repair. Methods of evaluating the cracking of the mortars applied in a concrete base were examined and an experimental program was carried out in which variables as cure, composition and thickness were considered. Testings were accomplished in mortars in both plastic and hardened conditions. A total of nine tests were performed. For the plastic State, consistence was the main focus of this study. The hardened mortars were analysed in terms of mechanical strength, elastic modulus, capillarity and immersion absorption and free and restrained shrinkage. The mortars were also evaluated in terms of drying shrinkage after being applied in a concrete base simulating a structural repair. The performance of the mortar with addition of silica lume was compared with the behaviour of mortars without any addition, as well as with the performance of a commercially available mortar which contains cement, polymers and plastic fibers.The used methodology allowed to evaluate that the test of the restrained shrinkage and the used repair System were satisfactory and that the addition of silica fume in the repair mortars improves the capacity of chlorides retention, however it presents a larger cracking tendency for the proportions of aggregates utilized.
