| Abstract: | Antiquity possesses nature as a reference to beauty and all art is created from mimesis and geometry. Within this concept, man, in his proportions and measures, becomes a reference of perfection and a model of beauty – a fact that later became known especially after the description of Vitruvius. The Renaissance rescues this idea of man as a perfect being, but not so much in the physical meaning of the body and more as it relates to anima. Therefore, beauty would not only be considered in the visual aspect of a body with perfect proportions, but in the rational and intellectual human development. Accordingly, architecture and the city would have as their main purpose the creation of conditions for the development of the intellective and sensitive capacities of men. Both would be able to generate a perfect society through order and decorum. In this modern context, the development of different notions of spatiality becomes manifested in architecture in a determinant way for the design of monuments and the city itself. Moreover, the concept of concinnitas, incorporated in the work of Leon Battista Alberti, generates new forms of understanding of beauty, in which time also becomes a variable. Time and space are expressed in architecture and in the city by means of a new rhetoric devised by humanists, which includes man as a third element. However, it is possible to perceive disagreements between Renaissance concepts and principles and the constructed architecture / city. In practice, the modern city, designed for the exaltation of the principality, contained a rhetoric that treated man as a secondary element by a dominant architecture. And all the urban ornamentation, both on the scale of the building and on the scale of the city (monuments), together with the variables "time" and "space", were treated in order to generate a language of dignity and respect, which would distantiate man, even if, theoretically, he was the center of the relationship. |
