| Abstract: | The use of unguided medications may mask symptoms of serious illness and cause a number of undesirable effects. The numerous factors that can stimulate this practice in Brazil are: little knowledge about the use of medicines; acquired customs within the family structure; the existence of an excessive number of pharmacies; drugstores and advertisements that convey the image of medicines as a commodity; and a public health system that can not comply with social demand. This work aimed to develop strategies that helped in the teaching and learning process, in relation to the teaching of Biology and health promotion, when using the topic of selfmedication for problem in the classroom. Thus, self-medication was used as a theme in Biology classes as a form of health promotion with students from Educação de Jovens e Adultos (EJA) of Colégio Estadual Rolando Laranjeira Barbosa (CERLB), in the city of Santa Maria da Vitória - BA. The developed activities began through a questionnaire and interviews as instruments of data collection aiming to know the profile of the students and to understand what information they had on the subject. The results pointed to an audience formed by young people with a mean age of 23 years. Regarding the use of medicines without due prescription, 68% of the participants stated that they do, corroborating with studies done with students of all levels of education, in which it was verified that the practice of self-medication is frequent, results also achieved in this research. Even they understand that the practice of self-medication can have consequences, 77% of the students said they practiced self-medication because they knew the symptoms and the right medicine them. The most cited groups of medicines used by the participants were analgesics (57%) and antipyretics (30%) followed by anti-inflammatories (10%). To assist in the development of activities, related videos available on YouTube and materials from the Educanvisa project were used. After the development of the activities, 90% of the students considered the strategies developed as interesting, which allowed, for 82%, the change in their behavior regarding the practice of self-medication. At the end of all activities the students produced narrative texts related to the theme that were used to make a paradidical book about the subject titled as Stories of the EJA Self-medication in Teaching Biology, educational product of this research. This study was approved by the Ethics and Research Committee of UnB’s Health College through opinion nº 2.839.491. |
