Abstract: The analysis of the transients in fluids (oil/gas) focus on the study of pressures and velocities resulting from a change of a steady-state to any other State. With the technological advances in the new material, more robust components are manufactured. In turn, this allows for higher flow velocities to be employed in the pipelines, and so the transient phenomena gain more and more relevance. These transient phenomena should be considered specially in case of nuclear or hydroelectric power plants and under pressure pipelines (liquid or gas), as the increase of the pressures caused by higher flow velocity may put its operation at risk, produce wastes or even cause the collapse of the system.Due to the complexity of wave propagation analysis in fluids, its study is made through numerical modeling with the employment of computational resources. In this work, the Method of Characteristics with a finite difference technique is used to solve the one- dimensional wave. The Solutions are given in terms of pressure and of flow velocity as a function of time and of its position in the pipe. According to this theory, a Computer code was developed (TRANSPETR0-1D, plane waves) having other versions (TRANS and RETRANS) as its starting point. The program allows to identify and to characterize the transient effects caused by the wave pressure coming from several boundary conditions. It is worth to mention the great graphical and visual aspects of this program, as they allow for a comfortable user interface and turns the program into a easy to use tool in the analysis and simulation process. Several simulations were run with different boundary conditions: abrupt flow interruption in the circuit due to the fast closing of valves, pumps, air chambers in the line, and other effects. The Solutions obtained with the developed program are compared against the results of experiments on transients found in the literature, as well as against numerical and analytical results. There was good agreement in all of the compared cases.
