| Abstract: | The high prevalence of chronic diseases in the general population is a challenge to the world's health systems, given the required lifestyle changes as well as the complexity of available treatments. Living with chronic diseases can be a stressor that tends to lead to not only physical, but also psychological and social compromises. The way in which people cope with illness and / or stressful situations throughout their lives is unique and in this sense the concept of resilience points to successful ways to deal with adversity in order to minimize the impact suffered, avoiding psychic illness. The present study aimed to evaluate the resilience, depression and anxiety levels of people diagnosed with chronic diseases and their association with sociodemographic and medical-clinical variables. Participants were 124 people diagnosed with chronic diseases: HIV / AIDS (n = 30), diabetes mellitus (n = 30), systemic arterial hypertension (n = 30), systemic lupus erythematosus (n = 15) and chronic renal dysfunction (n = 19). Data were collected at clinical specialty outpatient clinics of a university hospital between June 2018 and March 2019. The instruments used were sociodemographic and physician-clinical questionnaires, Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale for Brazilians, the Beck Anxiety Inventory and Beck Depression Inventory. Regarding socio-demographic characterization, 54% of participants were female, the average age was 49.6 years (SD=13.99), most of the sample (31.5%) had completed elementary school, 43.5% lived with a partner, 31.7% of participants had income between two and three minimum wages. The average time since diagnosis was 10.9 years (SD=7.8). The results showed that the average resilience scores had little variability among the five chronic conditions, and the average for the total sample was 77.10 (SD=12.39). This resilience score is considered satisfactory. Regarding anxiety levels, 47.58% of participants had minimal anxiety and 27.42% had moderate to severe anxiety. The average anxiety was higher in women (15.12) than in men (12.35). In the total sample, 58.87% of participants had minimum levels of depression, with women having an average of 14.42 and men with 13.21. There was a significant positive correlation between resilience and self-rated health in the total sample; and significant negative correlation between depression and anxiety levels and self-rated health. Significant positive correlations were observed between anxiety and depression levels for all chronic conditions studied and for the total sample. Regarding the negative correlation between resilience and depression, the results were significant for participants with SLE, DM and in the total sample. In the total sample, there was also a significant negative correlation between resilience and anxiety. The study showed that there is a portion of the population diagnosed with chronic diseases that experiences significant psychological distress, which may have repercussions on the quality of life of these people. Health teams should be aware of these possibilities in order to intervene and / or forward the demands to the professional psychologist, considering the repercussions of chronic illness, its social, emotional impact and in human relations. However, it is noteworthy that most of the sample presented satisfactory levels of resilience and minimum to mild anxiety and depression scores. This suggests that most participants developed strategies to manage stressful situations in order to minimize their harmful effects. |
